How did we choose?
Having good bedding promotes sleep, mood and reduces the risk of back pain or other muscle pain. It is therefore essential to choose your pillow , your comforter but especially your mattress. There are a number of different models, from the most classic to memory foam mattresses. Each type of mattress has its advantages and disadvantages, but not all of them are suitable for everyone.
You should choose your mattress based on your weight, your favorite sleeping positions, the ambient temperature and your preferences for comfort and firmness.
The different types of mattresses can be grouped according to the type of materials and their use. There are currently three main types:
- Spring mattresses : they are known for their flexibility and elasticity. However, they are quite heavy and can become noisy over time. Note that there are three main types of springs: biconics (made up of springs in the shape of an inverted double cone associated and glued to each other), multispires (made with a single continuous steel wire which allows optimal ventilation of the bedding) and the bags (the springs are arranged individually).
- Latex mattresses : of natural origin (preferred) or synthetic, they are often very firm. Natural latex is obtained from the sap of the rubber tree and has the advantage of being very comfortable because it is very elastic. In addition, it is a very good natural humidity regulator that can last for many years if properly maintained.
- Foam mattresses : these are the ones we favored in this selection because they are light, easy to transport and have a certain number of advantages compared to other models. Foam models are increasingly purchased because they are comfortable and relatively flexible thanks to their viscoelastic or memory foam . These are very popular because they adapt to the morphology of each according to body heat. They are generally sustainable models.
Then, other essential criteria are to be taken into account to find a comfortable and practical model, regardless of the type of mattress you prefer:
- Density : this is an important criterion, because it defines the firmness of the mattress. Calculated in kg / m3, it must be greater than 25 kg / m3 to ensure a minimum of comfort, knowing that about 50 kg / m3 is an ideal measure for a person thinking about 50 kg. The higher the weight of the person sleeping on the mattress, the denser the mattress.
- Dimensions : if some mattresses can be ordered to measure, the standard size of two-person mattresses is 140 x 200 cm or 160 x 200 cm (Queen Size). We kept the latter as a reference size in our comparison, but note that all the mattresses offered are available in various formats, including the famous King Size (180 x 200 cm)!
- Materials : as we already specify in our article dedicated to baby mattresses , whether of natural or synthetic origin, the ideal is that they include Oeko-tex certification , which guarantees products without toxic substances. Then, people sensitive to allergies will rather go to hypoallergenic , anti-mite and, as long as, anti-bacterial mattresses .
- Maintenance : upon receipt of the package, it is often advisable to let the mattress air out before the first use. Then, good ventilation in your room, a little vacuuming every month and possibly a little rag from time to time should suffice. If you follow the brand’s instructions, a quality mattress should last ten years.
We therefore took all these elements into consideration during our research, and we used the opinions of consumers to help us present the 4 best mattresses currently available on the European market.
The best cheap mattresses
Unfortunately, it is not easy to find quality mattresses for everyday use at a really affordable price.
However, we have managed to find a convincing model that users find very comfortable.
Abeil AB100 + : the best cheap
Abeil is a French duvet manufacturing company founded in 1870 in Auvergne. The company has made blankets and bed covers for a century for a local market.
The Abeil AB100 + mattress is wrapped in a microfiber cover for easy maintenance. A great asset of this model is that its cover is removable and washable at 95 ° C. You also have a large opening for easy removal and replacement.
With a density of 46 kg / m³, it is a mattress that combines both comfort and firmness. It also has an upper layer of memory foam, for a total thickness of 15 cm. Thus, it is easy to transport, if necessary.
Users are generally satisfied with its comfort, and are anyway convinced by its quality / price ratio. Some find it a little too hard and find that it tends to sag in the middle, and then use a mattress topper in addition.
Upon delivery, you receive a very compressed package, but do not trust its appearance: once unpacked, the mattress will return to its original shape and thickness in just a few hours. Oeko-Tex certified, it does not contain any products harmful to health.
In the end, we selected this model because it is a thinner mattress which still benefits from a correct density. It is appreciated for its softness and comfort, as well as for its low price! The cover is also removable and machine washable, which is very practical.
The best mid-range mattresses
Among the mid-range mattresses, you will find models with shape memory of a greater thickness and having more comfort zones.
We have included in this section a durable, firm and comfortable choice that satisfies many sleepers.
Simpur Relax Grand Class : the best mid-range
The Simpur Relax mattress is a shape memory model with 11 comfort zones and a total thickness of 30 cm.
Natur Fresh memory foam provides comfort for sleepers. It is a high density foam which has a ventilation and temperature regulation system for good ventilation of the mattress and good ergonomics. Its density of 65 kg / m3 offers pleasant firmness.
Indeed, according to users, this mattress is firm, but not too much. Stretch fabrics provide soft, silky and anti-static comfort. Treated against mites and molds, this mattress is also hypoallergenic.
Some users have however noted a small defect when using this mattress: it tends to sag a little too much during the night, which makes sleep in certain positions (especially on the stomach) uncomfortable.
By cons, the thickness of the mattress is quite large, so be careful when you get off the bed. Also check the dimensions of the headboard to see if they are compatible with the height of the mattress.
The Simpur Relax mattress is supplied rolled up and compressed for hygiene and transport measures, but your mattress will return to its original shape within a few hours. You get a 5 year warranty, which is a little bit but reasonable considering its price, and the mattress is Oeko-tex certified and made in Spain.
In the end, this shape memory model offers a thickness of 30 cm, as well as a soft and antistatic fabric to the touch. Although it is not very comfortable for some users, it remains a safe bet with the majority of the public. Unfortunately, it apparently deforms fairly quickly. However, users emphasize its attractive price / quality ratio.
The best high-end mattresses
Among the high-end mattresses, there are brands specializing in bedding such as Simba, Tediber or Emma which market their products online.
The products they offer, like the two models that you will find in this section, often have many specific layers to provide you with undeniable thickness and comfort.
Emma Original : the best high-end
Emma is a renowned German brand in the field of bedding. The Emma mattress that we present to you here is a high-end model that is popular with users.
This 160 x 200 cm mattress consists of several layers for a total thickness of 25 cm. It includes a thermoregulatory and elastic cover that lets air circulate, and has a non-slip coating on the bottom ensuring good support on your box spring. It is of course removable and machine washable.
It is then composed of three foams. The first, Airgocell foam, provides optimal ventilation while the second, has a pressure regulating action thanks to its shape memory. Finally, a cold foam provides back pressure and more firmness for support at the back, shoulders and nape of the neck.
It is suitable for all types of sleepers, and users agree that it is very comfortable, sometimes after a short period of adaptation.
The brand also offers a 10-year warranty on its products, as well as no less than 100 test nights! Produced in Germany, the mattress meets Oeko-tex standards.
In conclusion, most people who have tested it are delighted. It is one of the most popular mattresses in Europe thanks to the comfort provided by its three foams. It has also been voted product of the year 2019 by French consumers!
Simba Hybrid : the high-end alternative
Simba is a renowned brand in the world of bedding. We have included here a model of hybrid mattress very appreciated by users.
Comfortable, it is designed to meet the needs of all types of sleepers. Its materials, in addition to being Oeko-tex certified, are hypoallergenic, antifungal and anti-mite, and will therefore suit the most sensitive of you.
Be aware, however, that it is rather flexible, without being soft. It is in any case firm enough only to avoid unpleasant rebounds. Its thickness is 25 cm, and includes no less than 5 different layers.
Its originality is that it combines open cell foam for excellent breathability with 2,500 pocket springs which minimize the transfer of movements and provide flexible support. It also has a breathable sleep surface, a reactive memory foam, and a zoned base supporting seven comfort zones.
Made in Europe, it is guaranteed for 10 years, and can be tested for 100 nights before being approved. While it is generally appreciated by users, some still believe that its value for money is not entirely justified.
However, there remains a very comfortable and original mattress due to its double composition based on foam and springs, which offer optimal flexibility and breathability. It is also suitable for all types of sleepers. It is true, however, that its price is quite high.
Naturalex Visco Carbone : this memory foam mattress has a Bio-Memory layer and a Viscotex layer which offers seven comfort zones with a total thickness of 25 cm. Its density is pleasant, and the carbon fiber in the fabric of the tick creates a barrier against electrostatic charges. With its Air Fresh technology for optimal ventilation and its hypoallergenic materials, it is suitable for many sleepers. Too bad it tends to deform quickly enough.
Eve Memory Foam : suitable for all sizes and all sleep positions, it is made up of 3 layers of foam, with memory and breathability, and has 7 targeted comfort zones. Easy to maintain, it is firm while remaining tender, and will allow you to rest without being disturbed by the movements of your partner. In addition, it is made in France. If it is a little more basic than our two high-end choices, it remains a very interesting option!
Casper : a real best-seller in the United States, it is fitted with 4 layers to ensure optimal comfort and offer targeted support. Breathable and with a layer of memory foam, it is considered to be quite comfortable. According to users, the finishes of the mattress are however perfectible, which, given its price, is rather unfortunate.
Kipli : this hand-made mattress in Italy has been much talked about by its natural and eco-friendly design. Composed of 100% natural latex from sustainable plantations, it is equipped with a wool and organic cotton cover, and is reversible to adjust to the preferences of each (choice between a density of 65 or 85 kg / m3). Ergonomic and breathable, it is quite firm but comfortable. Its price is however significantly higher.
In conclusion, which mattress to choose?
In the end, although its price is high, Emma’s Original mattress is, it seems to us, the most convincing of this selection. With its comfortable thickness of 25 cm and its 3 types of foam, it offers ventilation, support and pleasant firmness, suitable for all sleepers. Easily removable and machine washable, it is obviously Oeko-tex certified, guaranteed for 10 years, and was elected product of the year in 2019!
For small budgets, the Abeil AB100 + is a quality choice. With its upper shape memory layer and its reasonable density of 46 kg / m3 for a thickness of 15 cm, it offers comfortable medium firmness. Given its price, it will nonetheless, probably, be a slightly less sustainable investment.
Finally, the Simpur Relax Grand Class stands out as an excellent compromise, in that it offers a comfortable high density bedding, with 30 cm thickness and a memory foam. Hypoallergenic and anti-mite, it is firm but comfortable. Too bad it is only guaranteed for 5 years, and that its quality deteriorates a little over the uses.
