How did we choose?
The wireless doorbell can be very useful to temporarily replace a broken doorbell, or simply as a main instrument if we do not want to get into expensive electrical work. However, they come in many variations, at very variable prices, too.
To help you determine the type of object that is best for you, here are the main criteria and main features to pay attention to:
- The push button and the chime : they form the two parts necessary for the functioning of the doorbell. The push button, or call box, is placed outside near your door, while the chime, or receiver, will often be plugged into a power outlet. The box can generally be connected to several receivers, which can therefore be located in several rooms of the house.
- Sealing and resistance : the housing, located outside the house, must of course be weatherproof. Check that the mark provides resistance to water, dust and a wide temperature variation. Ideally, place it as far away from weather variations as possible.
- Range : most models now have a range that can easily reach 400 m. However, this should be taken with care. Indeed, the environment and architecture can considerably hamper the proper functioning of your wireless doorbell.
- Food : this is an important criterion, since the doorbell is not directly connected to the sector. It usually runs on batteries, which are said to be durable, but can sometimes have a rechargeable battery. In the latter case, you will need a minimum of discipline, to ensure that the doorbell is functional at all times.
- Ease of installation : the installation has been designed so that you can do it yourself, in just a few minutes. Most models offer two options. You can opt for a double-sided adhesive tape, practical because it requires no visible work, but still less resistant. Pegs and screws are then provided for a more final installation.
- Usual features : the majority of devices have several dozen melodies and a few volume controls . Many are equipped with a memory function, which saves your last choices. A light function can be interesting, especially for the hearing impaired. The most efficient models sometimes offer a camera function , allowing you to see your visitors.
- Connectivity : there are more and more connected doorbells, offered at an obviously higher price. They allow you to manage visitors at the front door by smartphone / tablet inserted: you can speak to them, or even see them if your model has a video function. Note that, as with all connected devices, they depend on the internet connection and are therefore likely to be unreliable if your network is not optimal.
We started our research on various specialized websites and blogs, French-speaking as well as English-speaking, and consulted the numerous comparisons proposed by these.
The definition of the key elements presented above allowed us to sort among the twenty pre-selected models, and we have of course taken into account the many user feedback to include only the 4 best wireless doorbells of the moment.
The best cheap wireless doorbells
At low prices, the models offered tend to be very similar, and unfortunately suffer from the same faults: limited life, quality and functionality.
Despite everything, we were able to find a convincing model, equipped with the functionalities necessary for basic but efficient operation.
Avantek DB-11 : the best cheap
Simple but effective, this doorbell is very resistant to the elements thanks to its IP55 protection and is accompanied by a lithium battery with a lifespan of approximately 3 years. In addition to its 52 melodies, five volume levels and its memory function, it has a range of up to 400 m.
The Avantek DB-11 kit consists of a call box and a receiver box, to be plugged into a standard wall outlet. It should be noted that variants exist, since you can opt, for example, for a box provided with two receivers . You can therefore easily complete your kit if you wish.
The first strong point of this model is the quality of its transmitter box. Displaying an IP55, it resists humidity, dust and bad weather in general. It supports extreme temperatures, varying from -20 to + 60 ° C. It works using a lithium battery, included in the kit, which ensures you up to 3 years of operation.
It also promises a range of 400 m, which is quite impressive. Please note, however, that many users qualify this information: the range does indeed seem to vary according to the architecture of your house, and according to the environment between the box and the receiver. It is therefore more limited.
In terms of settings, this model is quite intuitive. It has no less than 52 melodies, for five levels of sound adjustment. And, something rather rare in this price range, the sound is quite crystalline. The Avantek also has a memory function: no worries in case of power failure, your sound and volume settings will be kept.
The kit includes everything you need to install the door call box. Users advise to favor the use of screws and dowels rather than adhesive tape, which does not seem made to effectively resist the elements.
Unfortunately, several users deplore a rather limited lifespan of the doorbell, which is unfortunately quite common in this price range. Others are of course completely satisfied: for the price, it may be worth trying …
The best mid-range wireless doorbells
In this category, the material quality is generally much higher, and it is possible to find more original models.
The bell we have included is also distinguished by its unique power supply mode, requiring no battery.
EcoDring Rendez-vous : the best mid-range
Proposed by a small French company active since 2015, this doorbell is distinguished by its “battery-free, wireless” operation, via an electric pulse system. With its 36 melodies, five volume levels and memory function, it also offers a range of 140 m. It is of course resistant to the vagaries of the weather and extreme temperatures.
The Rendez-vous bell is the most efficient version offered in the brand’s range. Note that the chime is sold separately. You can thus get as many as you want, since the call box is compatible with several of them by simple synchronization.
The originality of the product lies precisely in this case: it requires no battery, no battery to recharge, and no power cable. An economical and ecological solution, therefore!
Its operation is in fact mechanical: the visitor, by pressing the doorbell, triggers an electrical impulse which will itself activate an electromagnetic induction mechanism, capable of triggering the bell. The receiver must be plugged into a traditional outlet.
In addition to this practical system, the doorbell has the characteristics specific to this kind of object: it consists of 36 melodies, is adjustable on five sound levels (including a silent mode), and keeps these settings in memory in case of power cut. Too bad the sound quality is not really impressive.
Meeting IPX7 waterproofing standards, it withstands temperatures from -40 to + 60 ° C, and ensures a good range up to 140 m, which is considerably less impressive than many of its competitors. However, in this case, users seem satisfied with its reliability.
Finally, the product is accompanied by a three-year warranty and, a little more, the brand undertakes to plant a tree for each doorbell purchased. Small gesture obviously very appreciable!
The best high-end wireless doorbells
For a much larger budget, you will find models capable of integrating optimally into a connected house.
The first model also has a very powerful video system!
Ring Video 2 : the best high-end
This connected doorbell is used with a smartphone or tablet, and is equipped with a video surveillance function, which thus gives you the possibility of interacting with your visitors. It also has a motion sensor and infrared night vision. Easy to install and resistant, it has a modern and modular design.
In this case, only the call box needs to be installed: your screens – smartphone, tablet or computer – act as a receiver. The box is equipped with a camera, which offers you 1080 HD images. You can of course interact with your visitors thanks to the two-way communication system. Only downside: if the image is of excellent quality, the sound is much more average.
It works with a rechargeable battery, which requires a lot of discipline. The brand advises to invest in a second battery, to ensure that your doorbell will still be functional. If you currently have a conventional doorbell, be aware that you can replace it with this system and connect it to AC power continuously.
The housing is also supplied with two fronts, one black and one silver, in order to best adapt to the look of your home. If it is weather resistant, it does not tolerate temperatures from -20 to 50 ° C which, without being really impressive, remains acceptable.
The motion sensor with adjustable sensitivity and infrared night vision are assets particularly appreciated by users. In addition, thanks to the Ring Protect application, you can save and review the videos recorded by the camera. Note that this functionality requires the acquisition of a subscription, the price of which varies from 3 to 10 € / month.
Finally, like any connected object, it depends on your Wifi network. Some users sometimes notice loss of connection, or a latency between the moment when the visitor rings and the notification on their phone.
If it does not escape through connected objects, it remains one of the most reliable and appreciated products on the market.
Arlo : the high-end alternative
This connected model only offers this time a doorbell option, and does not offer a camera system (although this type of model is of course present in the range offered by the brand). It nevertheless has a remote response system, a silent mode and good weather resistance, while being compatible with an existing doorbell.
The control of this doorbell therefore works via smartphone or tablet, but requires the purchase of a Hub to ensure an optimal connection between them. You therefore have the possibility of answering the door via your smartphone, thanks to the notification you will receive when a visitor arrives there.
You can then communicate with him / her remotely, or send him a prerecorded response if you cannot afford to speak at this time. The visitor can also leave you a message, which is very practical. The sound quality remains fairly average, however.
The case works on two AA batteries, and is obviously weather resistant. It is compatible with temperatures from -20 to 45 ° C, which is still a little light in the event of direct exposure to the sun.
Finally, you can connect the doorbell to an existing chime if you don’t want to rely solely on your smartphone. The brand also offers chimes, and everything is compatible with certain intelligent assistants, such as Alexa.
On the other hand, the doorbell is offered at a price slightly too high for the taste of some consumers, especially since it does not carry a video function. If you do not need the latter but want to acquire a connected doorbell, this model remains a reliable option.
Honorable mentions
Techole : very similar to our entry-level model, this doorbell offers 52 melodies adjustable on 4 levels, for an effectiveness at a range of about 300 m. It has memory and light functions, and offers good weather resistance. This time, it is equipped not with one but with two receivers. Too bad the quality and volume of the sound seem a little less efficient.
Honeywell Series 9 : it offers eight melodies and the possibility of downloading additional ones, as well as a silent mode with timer. What sets it apart from its competitors is its portable chime, which you can place wherever you want. The disadvantages observed by the users led us on the other hand not to include it in the main selection: it requires a very frequent change of batteries, and we must hold the button of the doorbell pressed for several seconds to ensure that it works properly.
In conclusion, which wireless doorbell to choose?
In the end, if you are looking for a simple, basic and effective solution, the Avantek DB-11 model is a very interesting option. Offered at a very affordable price, it is equipped with 52 volumes and 5 volume settings, offers a memory function, a light indicator and a wide range. Very weatherproof, it is easy to install and has a lithium battery with a lifespan of around 3 years.
The Rendez-vous bell from EcoDring is distinguished by its operation by electrical impulse, which does not require the use of a battery. It is therefore an ecological, economical and reliable solution. It is equipped with 36 melodies and 5 sound levels, has a memory function and has a range of 140 m. Its purchase price remains higher, however.
If you are fond of technology, the Ring Video 2 is a model of choice. Connected, it allows you to manage your visitors via smartphone, and also has an excellent image quality video mode, equipped with motion sensors and night vision. Too bad it sometimes suffers from loss of connection and that the application is partly chargeable.
