How did we choose?
The difficulty in finding in-ear headphones lies in the quantity of existing models.
To help you in your research, we have determined the necessary criteria to take into account before purchasing this product.
- Connection: the headsets can either operate using a cable that connects them to the device, or via Bluetooth or Wifi. There is a gap between Bluetooth (which may however tighten with Bluetooth 5.0) and NFMI, which offers a more stable connection with less latency.
- Resistance: “IP” means “Ingress Protection”, in other words it is the protection index which makes it possible to assess resistance against solid or liquid elements (such as sweat, water or even dust). The PI is made up of two numbers: one which indicates the level of protection against solid particles such as sand and dust (from 0 to 6) and a second which indicates the resistance to water (from 0 to 9).
- Autonomy: For headphones working with a wire, the question does not arise. But for “wireless” headphones, the average is usually five hours. Many manufacturers provide a charging case that allows you to store and transport your in-ear headphones while charging them.
- The maintenance: the latter will determine the loss of the atria or not. It is essential that they are well integrated in the ears to avoid this scenario.
- Comfort : generally, brands offer different sizes of pads or several silicone tips to offer the best possible ergonomics.
- Sound quality : this includes the quality of bass, bass, treble, etc. An equalizer helps balance the sounds. Either the model is already set, or it offers to customize it using its application.
- Noise isolation : the Hear Through function gives the possibility to hear ambient sounds while keeping the earphones while active noise reduction reduces outside noise to give priority to sound quality.
We started with around fifty products present on the European market and the careful analysis of these criteria, allowed us to reduce our selection to 15 models.
Finally, by consulting the opinions of users, blogs, forums and English / French speaking sites, we have selected 6 in-ear headphones as being the best value for money at the moment.
The best cheap in-ear headphones
In this first price category, it is difficult to find headphones that deliver high quality sound.
We have nevertheless found two models with an impressive price / quality ratio to offer you.
Anker SoundBuds Curve : the best cheap
- Its ok
- Fully waterproof
- Almost non-existent sound insulation
Aesthetic and truly comfortable, the SoundBuds Curve will delight users who want really waterproof headphones at a lower cost while offering correct sound.
The Anker brand is often the leader in cheap High Tech accessories. Here, the presence of a cable placed on the back of the neck to connect the two headphones is barely felt, especially since the latter are light. The connection is made by Bluetooth 4.1.
This time, the headphones offer three ear mounts and six sizes of plugs. All this allows them to be used while playing sports or in a quieter environment with good support and excellent comfort. These headphones are classified IPX7 and are therefore completely waterproof.
The autonomy announced by the brand is 18 hours but in reality, it is rather 13 hours, knowing that it will depend on the volume of listening. This is managed with the remote control, which also allows you to take calls. Small negative point, the built-in microphone tends to let some of the surrounding noise pass.
In order to guarantee autonomy, you should remember to switch off the headphones after use because they do not benefit from automatic shutdown.
In terms of sound, the whole is moderately unbalanced by the presence of a little too much bass. This will appeal to users who like more dynamic music but probably less to others.
On the other hand, we do not recommend their use for watching videos because the difference between sound and image is a little too great.
Finally, the sound insulation is deplorable with external sounds far too present. However, there is no leak to report even at a higher volume which allows to cover the surrounding noise without disturbing your neighbors.
In the end, combining correct sound quality, interesting characteristics and a very affordable price, these headphones are perfect for basic use of music in an environment that is not too noisy or playing sports because of their good support.
1 More Triple Driver : cheap alternatives
- Excellent ergonomics
- Quality sound
- Neat aesthetics
- Fragile cable
- Not very good support
Designed by the American brand 1 More and more widespread on the American continent, these wired headphones have bet on a neat aesthetics since they are presented within a beautiful packaging with a worked design and quality materials.
Ergonomics is one of the great qualities of this model. Quite discreet and very light (18 g), these earpieces offer 9 different tips (6 in silicone and 3 in foam) which make it possible to accentuate comfort. In addition, the maintenance may seem more difficult but we advise you to turn the earpiece when inserting it into the ear.
On the other hand, the 1m25 cable is quite fragile. On it, there are 3 buttons with which you control voice assistance, sound settings and call management.
Once the pairing is done with iOS or Android, you can enjoy the music. THX certification gives high-performance audio quality (compliant, or even better than that of other products in its range) with good bass. It is broadcast through three dynamic speakers in each headset. Once put, you are in complete isolation from the surrounding noise.
The brand also launched its first wireless headphones on the market. The 1 More Stylish True Wireless are certainly connected in Bluetooth 5.0, but the sound is not as good as that of the Triple Driver offered at a similar price.
In conclusion, for their price, the Triple Drivers are excellent headphones. Their neat aesthetics should please you and their THX certified audio will allow you to listen to your favorite music with impressive sound quality.
The best mid-range in-ear headphones
In this section, sound quality and ergonomics must absolutely be there.
We have therefore selected two models that have these characteristics, as well as better technology and more advanced features.
Jabra Elite 75t : the best mid-range
- Water and dust resistance
- Four quality microphones
- Integrated Alexa voice assistant
- Reach a little weak
This pair has everything you would expect at this price: resistance to outdoor environments, good autonomy, stable connection and quality sound … Other features make it easier to use and you just have to focus on your favorite music, video or sports performance without worrying about the rest.
It is the evolution of the Elite 65t series . Even if we do not offer the Active version here, these True Wireless headphones are nevertheless safe values. The difference is that their tightness is reduced by one level to display an IP55 protection index.
On the design side, the brand keeps the same course of action while turning to more sobriety. The comfort and optimal support are ensured by the three sizes of tips.
To minimize interruptions, they keep the Bluetooth 5.0 connection. There is no lag between sound and image when watching videos. However, users find the range a little weak.
This time, to facilitate order management, the Alexa voice assistant has been integrated. In addition, many configurations can be configured via the Jabra Sound + application.
In terms of sound, Jabra integrates a total of four quality microphones, diffusers for deep bass and clear treble. The sound is therefore appreciable, as is the active noise reduction, which is very satisfactory.
Finally, autonomy can increase to 8:30 p.m. with the two additional charges offered by the case. A full charge takes 2h20 for around 7h30 of autonomy. But if you absolutely need a little battery, know that in 15 minutes, you will recover 1 hour of resistance.
Considering all these small improvements, it is not surprising that Jabra’s state-of-the-art headphones really make a sensation, and for many uses.
Jaybird Vista : the mid-range alternative
- IPX7 certification
- Its punchy and precise
- Possibility to use a headset alone
- 1 single microphone
These Jaybird headphones (now owned by Logitech) are completely water resistant thanks to their IPX7 certification. Thus, they can be used in a bath as well as in the rain.
The earbuds are delivered with their case (rechargeable by USB-C cable supplied) and three sizes of silicone earpieces for a comfort adapted to each. This box allows you to extend the autonomy of the headphones from 6 to 16 hours.
However, the real revolution of the model is that you can only use one of the two headphones. You then double the listening range. In addition, fast charging allows the earbuds to take an additional 1 hour in just 5 minutes.
The Bluetooth 5.0 connection is reliable and latency free up to 10 m. Pairing the phone is easy. You can take calls but unfortunately there is only one microphone.
The Vista are light (6 g with silicone) and compact. Users find them more comfortable with better support than the AirPods 2 which are however often used by athletes.
Regarding the sound quality, you will be surprised. The sounds are punchy and precise without leaving the garish. In addition, the Jaybird app provides access to a fully customizable equalizer. The sound will be all the more immersive.
In summary, the Jaybird Vista headphones are a good alternative if you need high water resistance. The sound is good and the equalizer will allow you to customize it at your leisure. They are however a little worse for taking calls than the Jabra Elite Active 65t.
The best high-end in-ear headphones
In this last section, we find much more expensive models but which are well worth their price in terms of sound quality and comfort.
Sony WF-1000XM3 : the best high-end
- Anti-noise function
- Also suitable for left-handers
- Good autonomy
- Excellent sound quality
- No volume control
For more sporty or picky users in terms of sound quality, we recommend the WF-1000XM3.
This model is the worthy successor of the WF-1000X . Revisited with a new design, it comes in two colors (black and silver), with an outer plastic wall. Comfort is present thanks to the four silicone tips and three “comfort” tips.
The connection is more reliable than on its predecessor thanks to Bluetooth 5.0. who knows less or no latency. However, if you have Hi-Res and Aptx-HD type audio, the connection will not be made.
Each earpiece has its uses. The left allows you to turn the sound off and on. It can also activate the Ambient Sound function, to hear the external world. The right is used to contact Siri or Google Assistant and to pause. These controls are tactile.
The headsets each have two speakers. Besides, if one of the two earbuds is removed, the music will pause automatically. On the other hand, the black point to note is the lack of volume control.
However, the strength of this product is undoubtedly its anti-noise function (ANC). You can therefore take advantage of this to mask background noise in addition to listening to music.
The battery status can be checked via the Sony Headphones Connect app. It also allows you to adjust the equalizer and switch to left-handed mode, which gives this model the ambidextrous character.
For the rest, users are satisfied with the quality of the calls, punchy bass and excellent insulation. The sound is more dynamic and precise than on the WF-1000X.
The autonomy has been improved to reach 6 hours with the possibility of three full recharges via the charging box. So in all, 24 hours of autonomy. Note that with 10 minutes of fast charging, you get 90 minutes of listening time.
In the end, the WF-1000 XM3 present quality sound, a stable connection, good autonomy and an anti-noise function making it gain in modernity. Its comfort and support will also delight athletes.
Apple AirPods Pro : high-end alternatives
- Excellent sound for Apple
- Effectiveness of active noise reduction
- No sound adjustment on headphones
Apple’s new headphones will delight iPhone users with their real sound quality and effective active noise reduction. Other users will be able to benefit from this provided that they make a cross on their functionalities.
With the H1 chip, these headphones easily connect to Apple devices. The IPX4 resistance allows use in the rain or during an intense sports session.
Regarding autonomy, it is approximately 4 hours with noise reduction activated for a total of more than 24 hours with the charging unit.
Comfort level, they are provided for purchase (which is quite rare only to be emphasized) with 3 pairs of earpieces to best adapt to your ear. However, small ears will likely be disappointed that they cannot use the smallest tip, which some people still think is too large.
The real plus of this model compared to the original version is Apple’s effort in terms of sound quality. Indeed, balance, precision and clarity are clearly above Air pods. It is true that they lack a little depth to be perfect but they are clearly sufficient to enjoy music of all types.
For insulation, here we are with a model offering real active noise reduction. The transparency mode is the equivalent of Hear Through and allows, when you take off a headset, to automatically hear the outside world in the second, which pauses.
In summary, the Airpods Pro are the first pair of Apple with good sound quality. It is not equivalent to that of the largest but is sufficient for the majority of users. Active noise reduction is however very present and we appreciate the good comfort.
Anker Soundcore Liberty Air 2 : with an autonomy of 6:30 per charge and a box providing five more, these headphones will never fail you. The sound is quite good but does not follow in the bass. It is unfortunate not to have parameters linked to an application because that would place them in the essentials of the moment.
Sennheiser Momentum True Wireless : IPX4 certified, they deliver a powerful, pure, balanced and pleasant sound. The four microphones ensure clear voices during calls. A voice assistant and an app are also available. On the autonomy side, they last 4 hours (12 hours with the case). Their Bluetooth 5.0 connection. with a range of 10 m is solid. But despite these aspects, the four different tip sizes fail to offer maximum comfort.
Beats Powerbeats Pro : these IPX4 certified wireless headphones have 9 hours of battery life (24 hours with case). Their maintenance and great comfort are beyond doubt, as is the high-end sound quality provided by their four microphones. Calls are marked by the intelligibility of the voice. Finally, we appreciate the physical control buttons. Despite everything, the sound insulation is far from being the best and the case is rather bulky.
In conclusion, which in-ear headphones to choose?
We chose the Jabra Elite 75t designer headphones , which have effective insulation and the Alexa assistant. They have an IP55 resistance and the application allows you to customize the sound effects to have the best possible listening.
However, there is a cheaper model which retains good material quality, with a bluetooth connection which provides correct sound for waterproof certification. These are Anker’s SoundBuds Curve .
Finally, if you have a larger budget, we recommend the Sony WF-1000XM3 , which is more discreet and very easy to carry. These wireless headphones deliver breathtaking sound, ideal for long daily use.
