Platelet
Rich Plasma Prolotherapy Helps Client Get Back To Extreme Martial Arts Training Ross Hauser, M.D. A 40-somethingish engineer came to Caring Medical in May 2006, with complaints of left knee pain and weakness for one month after kicking a heavy bag in martial arts. He denied swelling but felt as if his knee was loose with any lateral motion along with crunching with bending of knee. He could not do any martial arts training. Upon exam he had tenderness of the patellar tendon and medial collateral ligament. The exam also revealed some injury to the medial meniscus. Routine x-ray showed no abnormalities. He received regular Prolotherapy monthly for three visits and was 70% better. He was by now training again but then had a regression and a stronger solution was used. Because of lack of results an MRI was done which showed a small tear of the inferior surface of the posterior horn medial meniscus. The patient definitely did not want surgery so Human Growth Hormone was added to the Prolotherapy solution, which did aid healing another 20%. He was able to do some light exercise on the knee but whenever he pushed his knee especially with kicking and aggressive running, he would regress. At this point Prolotherapy was done with platelet rich plasma, specifically into the medial aspect of the knee. He has needed a total of six PRP treatments but he is happy as at his last appt he reported “I am able to continue “extreme” martial arts training.” |
