Overmanipulation Syndrome
Ross Hauser, M.D.

I recently saw a young lady who was referred to me from a well known Christian teacher. She had a somewhat mysterious condition which I thought would respond to Prolotherapy. During the second minute of meeting her I asked her the following question:

“JoAnne, do you ever move your body like this and it cracks.” I twisted my body in a funny way. She then said, “Yes, like this “crack, crack, crack” and then the other side like this “crack, crack, and triple crack.”

I asked her how often she did this and she said, “all day long!”

You see, she had overmanipulation syndrome. The mysterious condition was solved within the second minute of her interview.

Anyone who receives a lot of chiropractic manipulation (many times per week for months on end) or self manipulates like JoAnne was doing is going to have loose ligaments.

Loose ligaments in an area are equivalent to overstretched rubber bands. They do not bounce back to their normal strength and size on their own. The person must receive a treatment that will do that. The best treatment I know to help ligaments regain their strength and tighten is Prolotherapy. Prolotherapy is given exactly where the ligaments attach to the bone and thus stimulate their healing.

Let me say it plainly, there is no joint in your body that is supposed to crack. Cracking, especially in the spine, is completely abnormal. Self manipulation is an addiction. If you self manipulate, you have an addiction and the sooner you stop, the better.

People who come to the office because their self manipulation has loosened them up so much must stop self manipulating even if they get Prolotherapy.

The self manipulation is just going to loosen up the area that was treated with Prolotherapy. This is why they must stop.

You must also realize that too much high velocity manipulation (chiropractic) can loosen up the spine too much.

This may result in the person requiring more and more manipulation to feel good. A better approach is to get Prolotherapy to tighten up the loose spine or joints. Once the ligaments are strong, the spine and/or joints no longer sublux and the muscles stay loose because they are no longer called on to stabilize the loose spine. You see, when vertebrae have no stability because of ligament injury it subluxes and the muscles subsequently go into spasm. The treatment that has the best chance at long term cure, in my opinion, is Prolotherapy. Typically three to six Prolotherapy treatments are needed. Prolotherapy is given every four weeks or about once per month.

There is no known cure for arthritis. Prolotherapy and nutritional supplements can help alleviate, reverse, or end arthritic pain by treating an underlying cause that contributes to degenerative disease, ligament laxity. Strengthening ligaments and other connective tissue can help prevent bone on bone arthritis from developing.
