Q.
I’m considering disc surgery. What is your opinion?
A. There is rarely
any need for a quick decision about
back
surgery.
In almost all cases, even the surgical candidates, pain will gradually
diminish over a period of several months. In severe
herniated
discs,
surgery may be warranted.
Some studies have shown show that 4 years after surgery, both surgical
and non-surgical groups had the same level of symptoms. This suggests
gradual resolution in the non-surgical group, and recurrence in the
surgical group.
Also remember that misdiagnosis is common due to excessive reliance on
MRI
findings. If this happens to you, surgery may not even help at all. It
happens all the time. Even if surgery is successful, there is a long
period of rehabilitation and recuperation that is not present when
Prolotherapy
is chosen as the treatment approach. People that want to stay up and
active choose Prolotherapy for disc herniations over surgery. You can
always have surgery if Prolotherapy fails to resolve most of your
symptoms.
